sink or swim A joint project created over two years with Gary Shinfield culminating in an exhibition at Manly Art Gallery & Museum, 24 June – 23 July 2006. Gary and Geraldine have a shared interest in the boat form and in these images explore journeys that define identity and patterns of immigration. Both undertook research trips to Western Australia to see first hand the wreck of the Batavia and Darwin to respond to many stimuli including burning boats, the role of the government, the proximity of Asia, the indigenous presence and also the natural barriers for journeys to Australia. Gary and Geraldine also travelled to Darwin to work with master printer Basil Hall. The project was supported by the Visual Arts/Craft Board and the Australia Council.
